Our school, Erftgymnasium Bergheim, is located on the outskirts of Cologne, in the so-called Rhineland area, in North-Rhine-Westphalia. Currently, about 950 students attend our school, most of them joining our school in year 5 and taking their A-levels at the end of year 12 (“Qualifikationsphase 2”). However, every year we also successfully integrate ca. 40-50 students in year 10 (“Einführungsphase”), who formerly attended secondary schools in the surrounding area. Our students are monitored by ca. 80 teachers and administrative staff. We were certified “Europaschule” in 2008 (and have been successfully recertified in 2013 and 2018). This is why it is one of our essential goals to provide our students with a deeper understanding of the European ideals and “all things European”. We firmly believe that intercultural learning can best take place in authentic communication and personal encounters with students from other (European) countries. We are particularly looking for partners in Scandinavia for projects (e.g. email projects) and, hopefully, an exchange programme in the long run.
