Gymnasium Salzgitter-Bad
Staat: Deutschland
Stadt: Salzgitter

We are a public high school with currently about 1100 students aged 10-18 and round about 100 teachers. This makes us the largest of three high schools in Salzgitter. Salzgitter is a small town with 100.000 inhabitants and combines rural areas with areas of heavy industry. Major employers in our region are Volkswagen, Salzgitter steel company, Bosch, Siemens, MAN, Alstom train manufacturer and many smaller companies. As a contrast to these global players, we have a fascinating countryside and recreational areas nearby, e.g. the Harz mountains just about 20 minutes to the south. As Salzgitter is located pretty much in the middle of Germany, we have an efficient infrastructure and easy access to larger cities like Braunschweig (20 min.), Hanover (1h), Berlin (3h) or Hamburg (2h). The medieval city of Goslar at the foot of the Harz mountains is a UNESCO world heritage site and is 20 min. away from us. No matter in which direction you walk, you can take a deep bath in history all around. Admittedly, our school building is not very beautiful, but as this is within the administrative responsibility of the city and thus beyond our influence, we do our best to let the building shine from within by the students and teachers who share a lot of their time there. Another precious asset is the strong support of the students' parents on which we can always rely. We never had trouble finding host families for accomodating visiting students from abroad and we are able to offer a colorful visiting program with educational and fun activities. Our students learn English, French and Latin. Spanish is offered on a voluntary basis as one of many clubs in the afternoon.

Vorschläge für Projekte:  Running a project is not a necessity. We can very well do without that. Organising an exchange is a lot of work for teachers and nobody needs an extra burden. The focus should be on staying in host families and experiencing life abroad. This includes day trips. However, we make our students participate in a club with two lessons a week where they do oral reports in order to prepare them for people, country, culture etc. abroad. Normally once the "pairing" has been done, the kids get in touch via social media very quickly.
Wünsche hinsichtlich Partnerschule:  Student exchanges every year or every other year. Currently, we have student exchanges with the US (North Carolina), Finland and France. In the past, we also had yearly exchanges with London and Posnan (Poland), but they ceased to exist and we are looking for something new. Every year, we have about 50 applications for the US exchange, but the US school can only manage a fraction of that, so we would be glad to have another US school as a partner. Generally, we are open to every country where English is an official language.
