Hellweg School is located in Bochum, Germany, in the heart of the Ruhr valley, a former industrial and coal mining area. Nowadays it is known for its cultural variety as you can find theatres, museums, festivals, and exhibitions in every city of the Ruhr valley. Even though the Ruhr area is the largest urban area in Germany, it never obeyed to the hustle of other German cities, but kept a rough though friendly and genial spirit. Other famous big cities such as Cologne or Aachen can be reached within an hour, yet the Ruhr valley itself offers a variety of tourist attractions and countless leisure activities. Our school is a secondary school, teaching children from ages 10 to 18, i.e. from grade 5 to 12. We are proud to offer our students the possibility to apply for our bilingual classes in which the students are taught not only English, but also Geography, History and Politics in English. Furthermore we are cooperating with an Olympic Training Centre in Bochum which offers ambitious athletes to achieve their athletic goals and dreams but nevertheless assures them to receive an excellent education. Our school already maintains international cooperations with other schools in Europe, e.g. Poland, Italy, Latvia or Bosnia. Due to our international engagement we were assigned the title “School of Europe”, yet we would love to offer our students the possibility to participate in a partnership programme, an international project or even a student exchange with an American High School, not only to give them the possibility to use their English skills, but also to build an understanding of each other. In our opinion nothing helps to connect countries like connecting people, especially students who are eager to learn from each other and about each other.
