The so-called „Kooperative Gesamtschule Wiesmoor“ is the only school offering higher education in the small city of Wiesmoor. It is situated in a typically rural East Frisian area south of Aurich on the East Frisian peninsula. The landscape is characterised by the many canals (the so-called “Fehn”) and the width of the moors. North of Wiesmoor is the coastline with the unique Wadden Sea (UNESCO world nature heritage) and the islands. Bigger cities are Oldenburg, the Hanse cities Bremen and Hamburg, in East Frisia itself also Emden and Leer. Wiesmoor is fairly close to the Netherlands.120 teaching staff provide 1,300 pupils with a wide range of education starting with the so-called “Basisstufe” (integrated learning) in years 5 and 6, continued with the different branches of the Hauptschule, Realschule and Gymnasium (three different levels of ability, Gymnasium being comparable to a grammar school). Our school provides school-leaving certificates from mid-level (comparable to GCSEs) to the German “Abitur” (university qualification). The school profile is characterized by a wide range of extra-curricular activities. In the higher years (years 11-13) all the so-called “profiles” can be chosen: sciences and maths, languages, sports, social sciences and arts; in years 7-10, we have job orientation and a school firm. In addition to compulsory English for all levels pupils can choose between Spanish, French and Latin as a second language. Since 2006 the KGS Wiesmoor is part of a programme for gifted pupils and cooperates with universities in the context of “Leistung macht Schule - LemaS” (meaning roughly “achievement makes school”). We have established long-lasting co-operations with schools in Poland, Estonia, France and Spain. One focus in History is „Gedenken und Erinnern“ („Remembrance and Memories”). In addition to the normal curriculum, German history between 1933 and 1945 is dealt with in special projects.
