Innerstädtisches Gymnasium Rostock
Country: Germany
Town: Rostock

The ISG (Innerstädtisches Gymnasium) was originally the Goethe Grammar School founded in 1930 which merged with the “Stadtschule” in 2005.It is located in the centre of the biggest city of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania called Rostock and is very close to the Baltic Sea north east of Germany. Rostock-Warnemünde is popular with tourists for its beaches and water sports. Berlin and Hamburg are not that far away. There are momentarily around 829 students with 67 teachers. The ISG is characterized by linguistic diversity and practical lessons.English is the first foreign language for all students others are French, Spanish, Latin or Swedish. At state competitions, e.g. “The Big Challenge”, our students participate annually in both monolingual as well as bilingual competitions.Since 1993 we have been working in the Model United Nations project. It simulates the work of the UN and is conducted in several German and international cities. Every year, we prepare students for the meeting in Berlin, with meetings in English, too. Our students have also participated in meetings in Hamburg and Oldenburg. Since 2008 we have run our own model, entitled BALMUN - for Baltic Model United Nations - which takes place at our school. It is organized by students for students. One special project which is popular not only with our German students is the visit to a prison for dissidents from the German Democratic Republic time. There the students learn everything about the GDR time and how dissidents were treated. In the past there has been a partnership with a school in Alaska which hasn’t taken place since 9/11. Therefore we would be tremendously happy if we could start a new partnership program supported by GAPP to offer our students the unique possibility to interact with American students to broaden their horizon learning more about the American culture, tradition and language.
