Gymnasium Hoheluft in Hamburg is a young school, founded in 2012, with currently about 400 students aged 10 to 15 taught by 30 teachers. When our oldest students, now in grade 9, take their Abitur exams in 2020, there will be around 700 students aged 10 to 18 in grades 5 to 12. Our school is situated in Hamburg Eimsbüttel, a lively urban area close to the centre of Hamburg, Germany's second largest city. This location offers a wide range of activities and places of interest close by - like the harbour area Hafen City with our new urban landmark Elbphilharmonie or the city centre with many exciting museums. Teachers, students and parents at Gymnasium Hoheluft cooperate closely in the process of developing our school profile - aiming at special emphasis on Natural Sciences and Technology, Democracy and Law, Economy and Sustainability, Management and Ethics while generally qualifying our students for university entrance. Most classes are in German, but all our students learn English from grade 5 on and either Spanish or French starting in grade 6. Italian can be chosen as an additional language from grade 8 to 10. Our students spend eight hours per day at school (except for one short day when lessons end at lunchtime - and weekends, of course) - studying a great variety of subjects in settings ranging from traditional classes to project work and self-study times where students are encouraged to take responsibility for their learning process, for example, by choosing tasks and methods individually. In our long lunch breaks there is a wide range of extracurricular activities to choose from. Our two school buildings, a historic school house from 1907 for the younger students and our new building from 2016 with a very modern and transparent layout for the older students, cater to the various needs of our school community.
